Mechanics of growing

2006, dimensions variable,
birch plywood, sand, water, hose, watertanks, ceramic pots, plants, soil, stones, wire, wirelocks, bolts, steel axel, ballbearings, chalk and blackboard.

Plants move very slow, they don't seem to move at all, at least not for the human eye, but they do move and it is called growing. In the installation there is a slow movement going on. This is caused by the watertanks which are slowly dripping their water for the plants. The time of these actions takes several days or weeks, depending on the amount of the water. There are four mechanical actions going on in the installation.

1.  The chalk draws a perfect circle on blackboard and documents the passing time according to the decreasing of water in the same system. This is like nature documentary.
2. Sand falls from a tilting can to cover a plant. When water decreases the dryiness increases. Deserts grow.
3. The stone, which acts as a counterweight for watertank, falls closer and closer to a plant. Evidently squishing it. When water ends - life ends, or at least gets a lot harder.
4. fourth system gets more water in it's watertank from system 2 (the plant in this system is watered by a tank in system 3) and lifts an arm which is attached to a plant. When the tank is full it's weight is going to pull out the plant from the soil. So, in this case the more water the system get's the more it's pulling the plant up. Plant's grow towards sun.
Kasvun mekaniikkaa

koivuvaneri, letkut, vesi, vesitankit, hiekka, kivet, kannu, keraamiset ruukut, kasvit, multa, liitu, liitutaulu, vaijeri, vaijerilukot, pultit, teräsakselit ja laakerit.
 
Kasvien liike on hidasta ja kärsimättömälle huomaamatonta - kasvua. Installaatiossa toteutuu hidas liike kasveja kastelevien vesitankkien toimesta. Tankit kevenevät vedestä ja antavat painosta johtuneen voimansa vastapainolleen, joka aiheuttaa liikkeen. Teoksessa on neljä tällaista paino-vastapainoparia.  Teoksen liikkeiden toteutuminen vie useita päiviä.

1. Liitu piirtää täydellista ympyrää liitutaululle ja mittaa aikaa veden vähenemisen seurauksena samassa systeemissä. Tämä on kuin luontodokumentti.
2. Hiekka peittää kasvin kannun kallistuessa tarpeeksi. Kun vesi vähenee niin kuivuus lisääntyy.
3.  Kivi, joka toimii vesitankin vastapainona, lähestyy kasvia veden vähentyessä ja lopulta litistää kasvin. Veden loputtua elämä loppuu tai ainakin vaikeutuu huomattavastii.
4. Tässä systeemissä vesitankki saa lisää vettä systeemiltä 2 ja painon noustessa kohoaa vastapainona oleva nosturimainen varsi, joka puolestaan nostaa kasvia mullasta ylöspäin. Kasvu suuntautuu ylöspäin.
